After some rumors that started to place in August, the Diario Financiero de Chile reported on its website this past Sunday, November 22, that ViacomCBS would be closer to acquiring the free-to-air TV channel Chilevisión, owned by Turner (WarnerMedia; AT&T). According to the website, which cites “high sources” in the negotiations, ViacomCBS is about to close the necessary procedures to acquire the channel.

According to El Financiero, the negotiations took place in the US, directly between ViacomCBS and AT&T executives. The website did not report the value of the transaction, but informed that ‘although there was an initial offer valued at USD 14 million, the final value would be higher’, since ViacomCBS would assume Chilevision’s debts.

If the sale is completed, ViacomCBS would become the owner of two large Latin American TV networks, since, in 2016, it acquired the Argentine channel Telefe for USD 345 million. In addition, ViacomCBS owns several pay TV channels available in Latin America, such as Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, VH1 and Paramount Network.

Likewise, and according to what had already been reported in August, Turner’s acquisition of Chilevision would not include the building from which Turner operates, located in Santiago de Chile; nor are the operations of CNN Chile and the Canal de Futbol, which owns the rights to broadcast the local football league, both owned by Turner.
