VAR (Video Assistant Referee) technology, which has recently started its implementation in Paraguayan football, has also made its debut in Uruguay, in the Uruguayan Football League’s Final  played between  Peñarol and Nacional at the Centenario Stadium, in Montevideo. The system was already used in previous Copa Sudamericana and Copa Libertadores matches, and this time it had had its official premiere in a local competition.

VAR’s installation in the sports venue began this Saturday, and on Monday trials for its implementation for the upcoming sporting event were also done. The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), which managed the arrival of the system  in face of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol), reported that the company that works in its installation is Hawk Eye, the same entity that works for the coverage made by the VAR in Conmebol matches.

In addition to the trials that took place at the Estadio Centenario, there was also trainings for Peñarol and Nacional’s technical and campus staffs, as usual before each football match in which VAR is implemented. This way, Darío Ubríaco, AUF’s Arbitration Department Director, will make a presentation to the football teams, and there will also be a meeting today for the Uruguayan media, in order for them to have more knowledge about this video assistant referee. The first VAR implementation in Uruguay was at the end of October 2018, when the Gran Parque Central – Nacional Stadium – received the system for the match played by the team against Fluminense (Brazil), for the Quarter Finals of the Copa Sudamericana. Later, and since the end of last year, Nacional promoted the implementation of this technology in the Uruguayan Football League, to which Peñarol joined in a meeting that leaders of both clubs had with Wilson Seneme,  Conmebol’s Arbitration Director in April, in Asuncion .

This year, VAR returned to Montevideo for the Copa Libertadores. In July it was implemented in the Gran Parque Central for the match between Nacional and Inter (Porto Alegre) for the Round of 16, and also made its debut in the Campeon del Siglo – Peñarol Stadium – in Peñarol-Fluminense match, for the Copa Sudamericana’s Round of 16. On October 4th, the AUF made a request to Conmebol to have the system available for the Uruguayan League finals.
