The Paraguay Cup Final, which faced the Guarani and Libertad football teams at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium (Asuncion),was the first Paraguayan football match where Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology was incorporated.

Although the arrival of VAR technology to Paraguay was stipulated by 2020, the Paraguayan Football Association (APF) decided to advance its use for the definition of the Paraguay Cup. Months ago, the Spanish company Mediapro ran an agreement with APF to implement VAR technology for the 2020, 2021 and 2022 football seasons in the country.

VAR was used for the first time in the country during the Copa Libertadores Round of 16, last May 30th in the match played between teams Olimpia (Paraguay) and Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito (Ecuador).
