Two people were condemned in Florida, Uruguay for illegal distribution of audiovisual content via IPTV. As officially reported by the Uruguayan newspaper ‘El Pais’ on its web version, the sentence is ‘six months of probation, under certain conditions, for crimes linked to TV networks interception without the authorization of their owners’.
The sentence is for violating article 4 from Law N° 17,520 on Cable TV, and article 46 from Law N° 9,739, on copyright. As reported by ‘El Pais’, those involved in the case were being investigated since June 2019, and the complaint was made by a lawyer representing several companies, such as the Uruguayan channels Canal 4; Canal 10; Canal 12 and VTV.
‘El Pais’ also reported that several cable TV STBs were seized and, at the time of the raid, the Police verified the existence of several operating equipment. According to the Uruguayan Broadcasters National Association (Andebu), there have been similar procedures in other areas of Uruguay, such as Cerro Largo, Rocha, Minas, Maldonado, Florida, and others.
