Telefónica renews Wayra, its startup accelerator

Wayra, Telefónica’s startup accelerator, announced the launch of a new strategy focused on accelerating “more mature” technology companies to generate synergies and develop joint businesses.
The new Wayra image was presented simultaneously in eight countries. Under this new strategy, it unit will focus acceleration and investment in companies with a clear business plan and whose activities are eminently technological and related to Telefónica’s strategic projects in fields such as Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of things, cybersecurity or fintech.
Telefónica launched Wayra seven years ago. Since then, the Spanish telecoms company has invested, between Wayra and its funds, more than €160 million.
“We know that the best entrepreneurs look for business and scale, rather than only investment. That’s why we now focus on finding partners aligned with Telefónica’s strategy and interests”, explained Miguel Arias, Global Entrepreneurship Director at Wayra.
In Argentina, for example, Wayra has invested in 57 startups, of which 11 are integrated into Telefónica’s services for its customers, in areas such as resale b2b, use intent and b2c.
Among Wayra’s initiatives in Latin America, in January it added three new firms to its portfolio, including the OTT platform Zapping TV from Chile. On the other hand, in August the technology company Decidata opened offices in Peru through this unit.
