SuperSport to broadcast Formula 1 races in South Africa until 2022

SuperSport inks a new deal with Formula 1 to air races until 2022. F1 TV Pro will also be available in all areas where SuperSport is available, as part of the deal.

SuperSport has been the only broadcaster of F1 races in South Africa and the broader Sub-Sahara Africa for the last couple of years, and the renewal was understood to have been agreed earlier this year.

The SuperSport deal was concluded before the originally scheduled start of the 2020 season. However, this year’s campaign has, like other leading sports events, been interrupted by the global Covid-19 pandemic. The season will start on 3 July with the Austrian Grand Prix.

Formula 1 Management (FOM) has made it clear that it will not be opening up additional free-to-air coverage of the 2020 season when it resumes without fans on-site.

A number of broadcasters have already renewed their deals with FOM. These have included major agreements struck in markets such as in Canada (with TSN), France (with Canal Plus) and across the Nordics (with the Nordic Entertainment Group).
