Sony would be close to acquiring Crunchyroll

As reported by several specialized websites, Sony would have entered into final negotiations to acquire the US OTT Crunchyroll. The transaction would be valued at around USD 957 million. In mid-August, the specialized website The Information had reported that, originally, AT&T requested USD 1.5 billion for the platform and Sony was interested in the acquisition, but for a lower amount.

The information was originally reported this last October 30th by the web version of the Japanese newspaper Nikkei (Nihon Kaizai Shimbun). The OTT is one of the leaders in anime in Latin America. The platform was created in 2006, and in 2008 it was acquired by Otter Media, a joint venture between AT&T and the Chernin Group. In 2018, AT&T bought the Chernin stake, and took control of the whole of Otter Media through WarnerMedia.

In case Sony acquires Crunchyroll, the Japanese company will expand its presence in the anime market, since it also has Funimation, an OTT that will start its expansion in Latin America in Mexico and Brazil, where it will be launched in December.
