The Japanese multinational company Sony has officially announced last September 15th its decision to close its subsidiary in Manaus, Brazil, after almost 50 years operating in the country. The company reported that production activities will end in March next year, and that by mid-2021 will stop sales of TVs, cameras, audio devices and other products made there.
‘The decision aims to strengthen the business structure and sustainability, to answer the rapid transformations in the market’, Sony officially reported in a statement.
Sony also reported that its decision will not affect the rest of its business in Brazil. According to the information provided by the company, there will be no changes in the operations of Professional Solutions, nor in other areas, such as gaming (‘PlayStation’ brand, developed through Sony Interactive Entertainment Brazil); music (Sony Music Brazil); and entertainment (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment). As officially reported by Sony, its Manaus subsidiary has around 220 employees.
