The Brazilian FTA TV channel SBT (Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão) has agreed with the country’s Flamengo football club to exclusively broadcast the second match of the Campeonato Carioca Final, a competition that brings professional football teams of Rio de Janeiro together. The match was played last weel between Flamengo and Fluminense at the Maracanã Stadium.
As established by Provisional Measure (MP) N° 984, recently published by Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, the local team owns the rights to broadcast its matches on TV and, in this case, as Flamengo was the local team against Fluminense, the club negotiated the exclusivity to broadcast the Campeonato Carioca Final with SBT.
Since the MP was officially published, Flamengo has played two matches as the local team for the Campeonato Carioca. One of them was broadcast for free through FlaTV, its official YouTube channel, other social networks and the streaming platform MyCujoo, and, for the second one, it tried to charge a subscription for non-members of the club who wanted to access it, both inside and outside Brazil. However, MyCujoo’s payment method did not resist the high demand of those interested in accessing the broadcast, so Flamengo decided to enable the match for free through YouTube.
The rights acquired by SBT enabled the channel to broadcast the match between Flamengo and Fluminense throughout Brazil, although Flamengo also allowed, for the third time, the broadcast for the event on its official YouTube channel.
