Safaricom is in talks with Amazon about the use of mobile money service M-Pesa on its platform, part of its expansion.
Safaricom and Amazon already work together on Web services while the Nairobi-based company runs local cloud sales for the US giant.
“It is an important partnership as we go into new areas such as cloud,” announced CEO of Safaricom Peter Ndegwa.
M-Pesa makes up 33 per cent of the operator’s revenue and is used by its customers for a range of domestic and international transactions.
Safaricom already has a range of deals with international players in place to expand usage of the system including Visa, Alibaba, PayPal and Western Union.
