Rio Motorsports acquires Formula 1 broadcasting rights in Brazil

Rio Motorsports acquired from Liberty Media the rights to broadcast the Formula 1 seasons between 2021 and 2025 in Brazil, after Globo confirmed its decision not to broadcast them from next year. The next step for Río Motorsports will be to define which broadcaster will be in charge of airing the races. The agreement authorizes broadcasting them on FTA TV, pay TV and via streaming.

As reported by several specialized websites in Brazil, the launch of F1 TV Pro in the country, an OTT dedicated to Formula 1, is also expected from the 2021 season, and will be available regardless of the company that televises the competition.

‘We are looking forward to working with Rio Motorsports as the new exclusive holder of the Formula 1 broadcasting rights in Brazil, offering extensive coverage of the competition in the country for thousands of fans’, said Ian Holmes, Director of Media Rights of Formula 1. ‘It is also great news that, for the first time, F1 TV Pro will be available in Brazil’, added the executive.

Negotiations between Rio Motorsports and Formula 1 started last year, when Globo, owner of the broadcasting rights until the end of 2020, evaluated the possibility of not renewing the agreement to broadcast the competition on FTA TV (Globo TV) and pay TV (Sportv). In August, Globo finally confirmed the non-renewal of the rights starting in 2021, and has also cancelled  the agreement it had in force with Conmebol to air the Conmebol Libertadores in Brazil.
