Plex has launched a free streaming service for all its account holders.
The company and Warner Bros. have announced a partnership in September to offer films and programs by the end of 2019. Viewers will now have access to thousands of movies, TV shows, extreme sports movies, musical documentaries and Bollywood musicals.
Content available includes programs and films by Warner Bros. and other major production companies such as Metro Goldwyn Mayer, Lionsgate and Legendary. Unlike other streaming services that rely on monthly subscription fees, Plex’s revenue will be generated by advertising.
However, Plex said that these ads would only represent “about one-third the amount of ads you’d expect on cable television”. The library will be available to all free Plex account holders in over 200 countries, including South Africa.
The currently featured film titles include Lord of War, Rain Man, Raging Bull, The Terminator and Apocalypse Now, along with others to add. While some programs and movies may not be available in some areas due to local content licensing agreements, Plex said the “vast majority” of content would be available worldwide.
The Plex app is supported on smart TVs and streaming broadcast boxes from all major manufacturers, as well as game consoles.
