United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) presented a report that suggests that Peru would collect taxes from Netflix and other apps, and argued that if the measure is implemented, the country could raise more than USD 35 million per year.
In its report ‘Fiscal Panorama of Latin America and the Caribbean 2019’, Cepal estimated that Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Mexico could improve their annual tax revenues if they begin to collect these taxes from OTTs as Netflix.
‘If they are really selling in the country, they should pay the rents that remain in the country’, said Julio Velarde, Peruvian Central Bank’s president, adding that ‘how to design it is something that specialists should do’. Velarde also added that OTTs should pay the General Sales Tax (IGV), since they are goods services, in addition to the income tax.
