Oi to offer 4K on DTH service

Brazilian telecommunications company Oi plans to launch a 4k-compatible set-top box (STB) for the soccer World Cup, to be played next June. The operator will use the capacity of the SES-6 satellite to provide the technology, reported TelaViva.
Ermindo Cecchetto, Oi’s director of residential products, said they are in discussions with TV networks to see which one of them will have a 4K signal of the World Cup. The SES-6 satellite was launched in 2013 and Oi signed a multi-year agreement for the majority of the Ku-band capacity. Recently, SES announced the launch of its Ultra HD platform in Latin America.
The Brazilian operator also announced the introduction of catch-up and recording features on pen drives through all installed points, allowing users to pause live content and record any channel. In addition, the company integrated its VOD platform, called Oi Play, into the set-top boxes, for clients with DVR or PenVR (pen drive) and Internet access.
