Netflix continues to bet on Argentina with new original productions

Netflix has announced this Thursday, February 19th, that it is working on the production of new Argentine content to be included as part of its catalog soon. This way, the OTT continues to bet on Argentine productions after, in February 2020, Reed Hastings, CEO at the company, held a meeting with the country’s President, Alberto Fernandez, where he announced an investment plan and new original productions filmed in the country to be part of Netflix’s catalog.

One of the titles announced is entitled  ‘El amor despues del amor’, and it will be a biographical series based on Argentine musician Fito Paez, whose production will be in charge of local producer Mandarina. ‘This series immerses itself in the universe and the history of Fito Paez, one of the greatest stars of Spanish music, and thus covers 40 years of his life that changed the history of popular music’, they reported from Netflix.

Apart from ‘El amor despues del amor’, where Fito Paez will also be one of its producers, Netflix confirmed the second season of ‘Casi Feliz’, an Argentine original series launched in 2020, and starred by Argentine actors Sebastian Wainraich and Natalie Perez, which will feature guest actors. Another production announced is ‘Cielo Grande’, a new youth musical series, defined by Netflix as ‘a great musical production about a group of teenagers working to save a hotel specialized in water sports’. They also reported that Cielo gathers ‘childhood memories, family secrets, new friendships and romances’.

Also added to the announced productions are seasons 4 and 5 of  ‘El Marginal’ and the films ‘Granizo’ – to be starred by Argentine actor Guillermo Francella-, and ‘Pipa’ – headed by Argentine actress Luisana Lopilato-, in addition to ‘Serendipia’, a comedy special starred by comedian actor Agustin Aristaran; and the already announced series ‘El Reino’ and ‘El Eternauta’.

As part of its Q4 2020 results report presentation, which took place on January 19th, Netflix reported a total of 37.5 million subscribers in Latin America. Likewise, another of Netflix’s projects, originally announced in 2020, is to open new business offices in Buenos Aires.

In addition, the company has recently announced that they are close to opening their Latin American regional office in Mexico City (CDMX), from which the company will direct and operate for all the markets in which it is available in the region. ‘We are excited to open our headquarters for Latin America in CDMX this year. We expect that, by the end of 2021, our regional office will feature more than 100 employees’, the company told Forbes Mexico at the end of January.
