myCanal will be launched in Africa as the Canal+ OTT service makes its debut on the PS5 and Xbox consoles. The platform is also introducing a ‘profasile’ on a per user basis, similar to that seen on Netflix and the BBC iPlayer.
According to Canal Plus Group chairman Maxime Saada, myCanal has become a “major strategic player for the group”, with the OTT representing between 30 and 40% of subscriber acquisitions. He is well aware of the rapid uptake in streaming services – myCanal currently used by three quarters of French subscribers – and is in talks with both HBO and Apple TV to find a way that the US streamers can place their content on myCanal too.
After the deployment next year in Africa, other overseas territories will be pursued “we will approach Asia, then the rest of Europe,” said Saada.
Canal Plus has 20.4 million subscribers including 8.6 million in mainland France.
