Movistar Chile doubles IPTV accesses during 2020

As part of its 2020 financial results presentation, released by the company on March 3rd, Movistar Chile highlighted the growth of its FTTH client portfolio during the year by 54.1% compared to 2019. In addition, during the January-December 2020 period, the company’s IPTV accesses grew by 94.7%, reaching 40.3% of total TV accesses. Movistar Chile’s IPTV accesses doubled during 2020, since in 2019 they represented 19.7% of the company’s TV accesses.

At the end of May 2020, Movistar Chile announced news on its IPTV offer. As the main new features, the offer added direct access to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube and YouTube Kids apps, as well as TV channels. Movistar Chile’s total accesses totaled 10.1 million as of December 31st, 2020, of which 7.6 million were mobile accesses (54% were postpaid); and 2.5 million were fixed accesses. In the fixed business, the company reported that FTTH accesses represent 73% of the 1,074 billion broadband customers. In addition, the company’s IPTV accesses represent the already mentioned 40.3% of the 498 thousand TV clients.

As of December 31st, 2020st , Movistar Chile’s operating income showed an 8.2% drop compared to December 2019. This way, the company reported that the drop in pay TV revenues took place due to the lower income from DTH and fixed telephony services. ‘This is partially offset by the growth in broadband revenues, driven by FTTH, IPTV and communications and data services for companies, boosted by digital solution services such as cloud, cybersecurity and IoT’, they reported from Movistar Chile.

The company also emphasized that a technological transformation process on its TV business is taking place, from DTH technology to other offers such as Movistar TV (IPTV) and Movistar Play (OTT). During 2020, Movistar Chile reported a decrease in DTH accesses, which resulted in a 5.1% drop in total TV accesses, which, at the end of 2020, reached 496,770 accesses. As they officially explained from the company, this issue, added to the interruption of premium sports channels during the Covid-19 quarantine, showed a 20.5% drop in TV revenues.
