IFT grants new deadline for Disney to sell Fox Sports in Mexico

Mexican Telecommunications Federal Institute (IFT) officially reported this Wednesday, August 4th, that it has granted a new deadline for Disney to sell Fox Sports operations in the country, according to what the Mexican regulator established to approve the merger between The Walt Disney Company and 21st Century Fox, which took place in March 2019.

The deadline for the sale was initially scheduled for this Monday, August 3rd. However, as reported by the IFT, Disney and Fox requested an extension of the term due to the Coronavirus pandemic and, as an answer, the regulator decided to grant the extension, which runs from July 28th to September 28th, 2020, so that the disengagement period would restart on September 29th, 2020 and end on October 5th.

In June this year, the Mexican website Mediotiempo reported that there was a buyer interested in acquiring Fox Sports’ operations in Mexico, although it did not report its name. In Brazil, the Economic Defense Administrative Council (CADE) approved the Disney-Fox merger in May, without the requirement to sell Fox Sports in the country, as originally determined in 2019.
