Brazilian conglomerate Grupo Globo has officially reported days ago that it has begun to implement 8K trials on the 2020 Olympic Games broadcasts. According to the information reported, trials are taking place on Globoplay, the company’s SVOD OTT, through selected 8K TVs with the platform’s app pre-installed.

In addition to the trials that are being developed with the current edition of the Olympic Games, Globo has already been making trials to broadcast in 8K in other previous events, such as the 2014 World Cup, played in Brazil, and the 2016 Olympic Games, which took place in Rio de Janeiro. From the company they reported that the 8K resolution is four times higher than the 4K resolution, and, as a result of its implementation, a more detailed and realistic image can be achieved.  

To implement the trials made before the current edition of the Olympic Games, Globo partnered with the Japanese company NHK, to which, for the trials that are taking place during the 2020 Olympic Games, OBS (Olympic Broadcasting System) , which manages the broadcasts of the competition; and the technology company Intel, were added.

From Globo they have also confirmed that, once the 8K trials on the 2020 Olympic Games are finished, the next step will be to extend them to the Group’s own productions.
