As reported by the Uruguayan newspaper El Observador and other media in the country, the Uruguayan version of Fox Sports will stop broadcasting in the country after five years. According to the newspaper, the decision ‘is due to a change in business strategy, following the acquisition of the international TV network by the Disney company in March this year’. The channel uses studios, mobiles and technical equipment of Canal 4, a Uruguayan FTA TV channel.
The only Uruguayan production of the TV network, Fox Sports Radio Uruguay, will stop broadcasting after six seasons, on December 9th. In addition, the Uruguayan website TV Show reported that the same will happen with some of the TV programs currently being broadcast on Fox Sports Argentina. Apart from Fox Sports Radio Uruguay, the sports channel also broadcasts La ultima palabra in the country, with Uruguayan journalists and former soccer players.
Last March 20th, Fox-Disney merger was completed. for more than USD 71 billion. The entertainment company already owned ESPN and, when it joined Fox, it has also acquired Fox Sports. To end the merger, Fox’s sports channels (Fox Sports) must be sold in Brazil and Mexico, as established by both countries regulatory bodies (CADE and IFT). Recently, the IFT granted an extension to Disney for the sale of Fox Sports in the country, and CADE, in Brazil, decided to examine its position on that issue, for the same reason.
