ESPN produces first 4K broadcast of a sporting event in Argentina

ESPN and the audiovisual group Mediapro produced the first 4K sporting event in Argentina with the transmission, on Saturday, August 25, of the match between Los Pumas and South Africa’s Springboks for the Rugby Championship played in the city of Mendoza.
ESPN had made its first transmission in 4K with the Champions League semifinal in April this year. Then, in May, the channel broadcasted in 4K the final of that tournament. On the other hand, DTH operator DirecTV aired in Ultra HD the derby of the Spanish League played between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Later, it did the same with the matches of the soccer World Cup Russia 2018.
The game between Los Pumas and Springboks was only broadcast on channel 4000 of DirecTV. ESPN announced that it will also have in 4K the other two matches that the Argentine team plays at home for the Rugby Championship.
The mobile unit OB54 of Mediapro Argentina was used for the transmission. “The unit has capacity for multiple simultaneous productions, to differentiate local and international distributions, both for 4K and HD versions.” The entire chain of filming, processing and transport is in 4K, including cameras, recording servers, replays, graphic and encoding, to provide a complete experience in the highest quality “, explained Diego Ojeda, ESPN’s director of Technology and Operations.
