Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, let this last Friday, April 9th, through Decree N° 10,669 (2021), to include the Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC) in the so-called ‘Programa Nacional de Desestatização’ As officially reported, as a result of said inclusion, the company will face an evaluation process to define whether it will be privatized or if it can be removed.
In Brazil, EBC manages the FTA TV channel ‘TV Brasil’, in addition to the news agency Agência Brasil, and radios such as Rádio Nacional AM do Rio de Janeiro (1,130 KHz), Rádio Nacional AM de Brasília (980 KHz), Nacional FM de Brasília (96.1 MHz), Rádio MEC AM do Rio de Janeiro (800 KHz), Rádio MEC FM do Rio de Janeiro (99.3 MHz), Rádio Nacional da Amazônia OC (11,780 KHz and 6,180 KHz), Rádio Nacional AM do Alto Solimões (670 KHz) and Rádio Nacional FM do Alto Solimões (96.1 MHz).
The project was originally announced in early 2020. EBC was originally created in 2007, during the Government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil. That same year, the company created TV Brasil, which replaced TV Educativa (TVE Brasil). In addition to EBC, another of the companies that joined the PND was Electrobras, the entity responsible for generating and distributing electricity in the country.
