Disney+ tops 100 million subscribers globally after launching in Latin America

Bob Chapek, CEO at The Walt Disney Company, has announced this last Tuesday, March 9th, that Disney+, the company’s new SVOD OTT, recently launched in Latin America, now reaches more than 100 million subscribers globally, after 16 months of its original launch, in November 2019. Up to now, no official information was reported on the number of Latin American subscribers to Disney+.

‘The great success of Disney+, which now features more than 100 millions subscribers, has inspired us to be even more ambitious, and to significantly increase our investment in the development of high-quality content’, Chapek said during the last Disney’s virtual annual shareholders meeting. The executive also noted that the company is targeting more than 100 new titles per year from its biggest brands including Marvel Studios, Star Wars, Disney Animation and National Geographic. ‘Our direct-to-consumer business is the Company’s top priority, and our robust pipeline of content will continue to fuel its growth’, Chapek said.

Disney+ was originally launched in the US on November 12th, 2019, to later arrive at Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Latin America -where its launch took place on November 17th, 2020-, and Singapore.

Some of the partners with whom Disney has already started negotiations to add Disney+ to its offers are Telecom Argentina (to offer Disney+ for Cablevision, Personal and Flow customers); Izzi (Televisa); America Movil (Telmex); Mercado Libre in Mexico, Brazil and Chile; Globo (Globoplay); Telefonica Brazil (Vivo); Bradesco; Tim Brazil; and Visa for several countries in the region (including Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic,  Uruguay and others). Most of the offers focus on discounts on the Disney+ monthly subscription, free trial periods and special offers together with the Disney platform. In addition, Samsung announced that, since November 17th, 2020, when Disney+ was launched in Latin America, the platform is available on the company’s smart TVs in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama and Peru. In addition, this year, Cablevision has also added Disney+ into its STBs in Uruguay.
