Disney changes its strategy and plans to release ‘Cruella’ and ‘Black Widow’ in Latin America in theaters and on Disney+ under the PVOD format

The Walt Disney Company Latin America has officially announced this last Friday, April 9th, that its ‘Cruella’ and ‘Black Widow’ films will be released at the same time in theaters and on Disney+ in the region. According to the information reported by the company, the premiere of ‘Cruella’ is scheduled for May 28th, while ‘Black Widow’s one will take place on July 9th.

Access to both films can be done on Disney+ through the ‘Premier Access’ format, PPV that the platform enables for some titles. Although the value changes according to each country, Disney reported that, for example, in Argentina, the payment to access each title is valued at AR$ 1,050 (USD 11).

Since its launch in Latin America, in November 2020, Disney has released several titles in PVOD format, such as ‘Mulan’; ‘Soul’ and ‘Raya and the last dragon’. In addition, although the company plans to release more titles on its SVOD OTT during the year, the decision to launch them in theaters or on Disney+ in PVOD format will depend on the platform’s subscribers preferences, as reported by Bob Chapek, CEO at The Walt Disney Company. In the case of ‘Cruella’ and ‘Black Widow’, Disney will make a change on its strategy, and will allow the premiere of the titles both on Disney+ and in theaters.

‘We set a target of more than 100 new titles per year, and this includes Disney Animation, Disney Live Action, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. Our direct-to-consumer business is the company’s top priority, and our robust pipeline of content will continue to fuel its growth’, reported Chapek during Disney’s latest virtual annual shareholders meeting. In addition, in early March, the executive reported that Disney+ features more than 100 million subscribers globally, after 16 months of its original launch, in November 2019. Up to now, no official subscriber figures have been reported to the platform in Latin America.
