Disney bets on PVOD format to release movies on Disney+

Disney+, The Walt Disney Company’s new SVOD OTT, officially launched in Latin America on November 17th, 2020, released the official trailer for ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’, the next title from Walt Disney Animation Studios, whose premiere is scheduled for next March 5th, both in movie theaters and on the platform. Access to the new film will be done through an additional payment, as happened with the premieres of ‘Mulan’ and ‘Soul’.

In the case of ‘Mulan’, the film was originally released on August 5th, 2020 on Disney+ in PVOD format for a three months period, and, as of December, it was offered to all the platform’s subscribers, without the need for an additional payment. ‘Soul’, a film from Pixar Animation Studios, was the second Disney film to be released directly on Disney+ on December 25th, although it was released in theaters in countries where Disney’s new SVOD OTT is not available.

In November 2020, before the launch of Disney+ in Latin America and during the company’s fiscal fourth quarter results presentation, The Walt Disney Company reported that the SVOD OTT, originally launched in the US on November 12th, 2019, featured a total of 73.7 million subscribers. The figure includes Disney+ global subscribers from its launch date in the US to October 3rd, 2020.
