Discovery+ to start its international expansion in the US and plans to arrive at Latin America in 2021

As announced in September, and as reported on several specialized websites, Discovery has announced this Wednesday, December 2nd, that it will launch Discovery +, its new D2C OTT, in the US. As detailed, the SVOD OTT will be launched in the North American country on January 4th, and globally throughout 2021, including Latin American countries.

Regarding the international expansion of the new platform, from Discovery they detailed that they plan to launch it in more than 25 markets throughout 2021. Apart from the United Kingdom and Ireland, where it is already available, countries such as India, the Nordic countries, Holland and Spain are also included. The expansion is also expected to take place in some Asian countries, and, in Latin America, Brazil will also be included. The platform will support two monthly subscription models: one with advertising, for USD 4.99; and another without advertisements, valued at USD 6.99. In addition, Discovery is working in a partnership with Verizon, so that customers of the US company can access the platform for free or at a promotional price, depending on the plan they have available.

For its launch, Discovery+ features a catalog of around a thousand hours of original content and classic titles from Discovery channels, including HGTV, Food Network, TLC, ID, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network), Travel Channel, Discovery Channel and Animal Planet. as well as content from A&E, History, Lifetime, and others. From Discovery they reported that they will make a wide range of non-fiction content and entertainment available, based on real life, including documentaries. Several websites even reported that it will also include BBC productions. In Europe, Discovery+ will offer access to Eurosport, its sports channel that features tennis, motorcycling, football and other sports competitions. In addition, it will be the official screen in Europe for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
