David Zaslav, CEO at Discovery, has confirmed days ago that the company will join the OTT universe with a new platform, which will soon be launched globally, including Latin America. The executive made the announcement last week at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia shareholders conference. The company had already reported to be working on a new similar project last year.
As reported by Zaslav, Discovery is about to launch a new platform that will combine all its brands and content, including sports. Although the launch date and the monthly subscription price value have not been reported yet, the executive announced that the OTT will be introduced to the market ‘very soon, and globally’.
‘I think this launch will be the most important thing we have done at the company since I have been at Discovery. And we have been preparing ourselves for this moment for years. This is one of the reasons we got into sports, and why we bought Scripps Networks Interactive. And we have these contents ownership at a global level’, reported the executive.
In relation to the launch of the new platform, Zaslav explained the importance of having new partners, and said that ‘for this reason, we have been working in recent years to have everything ready’. The executive also explained that the new OTT will be focused on unscripted content, of which Discovery already owns all the rights, and for which they have been producing originals. ‘The more and more we talk with consumers and do research, we notice that there are already a lot of scripted series and movies. But ours is different’, he said.
With the launch of the new platform, Discovery will be joining the OTT world, together with other global launches already available in the market, such as Apple TV +, Peacock, HBO Max, which will start its international expansion in Latin America, and Disney+, which will be officially launched in the region next November 17th, with its content catalog already confirmed.
