Launching on 15 July 2019 exclusively on DStv (ch 177), HGTV is the global authority on everything home, with engaging on-screen superstar experts, fascinating families, compelling renovations and stunning transformations that make all things home fun.
Globally audiences are engaging more and more in entertaining lifestyle, DIY, makeover and home and garden content. South African audiences are no different, as seen by the growth in viewership on all DStv lifestyle channels and the last few years. With the addition of HGTV, a long-standing partnership between Discovery and DStv, is celebrated by bringing the best of the world into South African homes. The channel will be available to our Premium, Compact Plus & Compact customers.
With over 20 years investment in Africa and as part of its continued global content expansion since buying the former Scripps Network brands, Discovery now expands its portfolio to 11 channels, securing its position as the biggest real-life TV entertainment portfolio in Africa.
HGTV is rated the #1 cable network in the USA and has the highest viewing time spent in Europe of all the dedicated channels. In 2018 alone, HGTV saw the highest viewing time per person in the USA totalling 88.67 minutes a week – echoed by obsessed celebrity fans like Michelle Obama, Reese Witherspoon and Seth Rogan. Soon South African audiences and personalities will no doubt join this list.

Content on the channel focuses on five pillars of the home: buying and selling, renovation, flipping, home improvement and dream homes, in addition to a library of new content that South African audiences will now have access to. “Understanding the call for new and exciting content, HGTV brings with it up to 800 new hours of content developed annually,” says Turnbull.
