As confirmed by Ana Julia Marine Lopez, Cuban Sub-Minister of Communications, days ago to the local newspaper Granma, the country’s Communications Ministry has put the analog blackout off for 2024.

Regarding the reasons for the decision, the newspaper reports that, initially, the DTT migration process in Cuba was going to be implemented between 2013 and 2023, but, as a result of financial problems and limitations in terms of liquidity and ways to acquire new STBs that the country has faced, it was necessary to make changes in the terms of the project, for which Cuba has been strengthening the DTT devices production, especially in those areas where greater progress is expected in the analog blackout implementation process.

According to Marine Lopez, the Cuban Government has approved the financing that allowed to boost these device’s production, through which it is expected to deliver 318 thousand DTT STBs this year. Likewise, and according to the information reported by Granma, from 2013 to date, Cuba has sold 2.7 million DTT STBs.

Regarding the new scheme for the analog blackout’s implementation in Cuba, the executive explained that the first stage of the process will begin this year in the country’s western provinces, from Pinar del Rio to Matanzas. ‘Then, in 2022, we would go from Villa Clara to Camagüey, and, in the last phase, by 2023, we would be making the transition in the eastern part of the country’, she reported.
