Chile increases its pay TV subscribers base and closes 2020 with 3.27 million clients

According to the latest figures reported by the Chilean Subsecretaria de Telecomunicaciones (Subtel), the country’s pay TV market ended 2020 with a total of 3.27 million subscribers. The figure shows a 30 thousand subscribers increase regarding the almost 3.24 million reported in Q3 2020, and an increase of 1.4% in the total pay TV customer base in the country on an annual basis, compared to to the 3,224 million subscribers that the area reported at the end of Q4 2019.

In addition, according to Subtel, of the 3.27 million subscribers reported at the end of 2020, 1,894 million belong to cable and IPTV technologies, while the remaining 1,375 million belong to DTH, which has been recording losses on its subscriber base since 2018.

The operator with the highest number of subscribers as of December 31st, 2020 was VTR (Liberty Latin America), with a total of 1.06 million and 32.5% of the market share. DirecTV (AT&T) ranked second, with 739 thousand subscribers and 21.2% of the market share. Movistar (Telefonica), on the other hand, achieved 497 thousand subscribers (15.2% of the market share); and Claro (America Movil) made 368 thousand subscribers and 11,3% of the market share. The remaining 18.4% belongs to the rest of the country’s operators. Apart from that, despite leading the market in terms of subscribers and market share, VTR lost eight thousand customers between Q3 and in Q4 2020, since its subscriber base had 1,071 million subscribers as of September 30th. The company was the only one that has shown this trend during the period, since the rest managed to increase its customer base.

‘The increase in pay TV subscribers in previous years has benefited most of the companies, due to an increase in the use and demand of this service nationwide. However, this market has stagnated, which can be seen in a weak growth of 1.4% in the last 12 month-period’, they have officially reported from Subtel. (bellarinova.com)
