Brazilian pay TV market falls again in August

According to data from Brazilian regulator Anatel, the pay TV market registered 17.79 million in August, representing a decrease of 536,000 (-2.9%) contracts compared to the same period of 2017, and 37,000 (0, 2%) compared to July this year.
When compared to August 2017, Oi increased its subscriber base by adding 126,000 new contracts (+8.7%). Vivo lost 25,000 customers (-1.6%), Sky 146,000 (-2.7%), and the Claro group (which includes Net and Claro TV) lost 402,000 (-4.3%). Smaller operators lost 89,000 contracts.
When compared to July this year, Net lost close to 19,000 clients, while Claro lost 9,000. In turn, Vivo lost close to 6,000 subscribers. Sky grew by 8,000 subscribers and Oi by 7,000.
At the end of August, the four largest pay TV groups held 97.2% of the market: Claro (Net+Claro TV) had 8.89 million customers (49.98% – Net recorded 7.16 million), Sky 5.21 million (29.3%), Vivo 1.61 million (9.05%), and Oi 1.57 million (8.8%). Smaller providers registered 503,000 subscribers (2.8%).
