Mexican Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) has authorized Telcel (América Móvil) to buy 60 Mhz of spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band from Grupo MVS.
In a statement, América Móvil said it expects to complete the acquisition during the second quarter of 2017. The 2.5 Ghz band is used for next generation mobile services, including the deployment of LTE. The operation had been announced at the end of November last year.
According to IFT, “Telcel will be able to acquire 60 MHz of radio spectrum in 1,759 localities, to cover 75.41% of the national population”.
MVS had obtained the spectrum to provide MMDS services, which it subsequently abandoned. In 2012, the Ministry of Communications and Transportation initiated a process to recover the spectrum over that band. MVS and other 10 licensees returned 130 MHz, which will be tendered in 2017.
