Algar Telecom confirms it will stop marketing its cable and DTH offerings in Brazil

According to information that was reported on several specialized websites in Brazil, the telecommunications company Algar Telecom has officially confirmed during the first days of 2021 that it will stop marketing its pay TV offers, both on cable and DTH.

As reported in February 2020, Algar has run an agreement with the Brazilian pay TV operator Sky (AT&T), so that the company’s current customers can continue  receiving  its TV offer. According to Brazilian websites, Algar’s Board of Directors have approved the company’s exit from the country’s pay TV market, although it was not informed as to what date it will become effective.

The company launched its pay TV offer during the 90s, offering its first services in Araguari and Uberlândia (Minas Gerais). Its DTH offer was launched years later, in 2010. According to Anatel’s figures, in November 2020, the Brazilian pay TV market featured less than 15 million subscribers, and is on a similar base to the one it had in 2012 .
