The Walt Disney Company says two projects produced with the aid of local African stakeholders are scheduled to be released in 2016. The film ‘Queen of Katwe’, starring Academy Award-winner Lupita Nyong’o, and ABC television series ‘Of Kings and Prophets’ will hit screens next year.
“Disney is a global family entertainment company with a strong commitment to South Africa and Africa,” said Deirdre King, Head of Marketing for The Walt Disney Company Africa. “Being part of the local community is a core part of Disney’s commitment to the market as is recognizing the importance of Africa’s unique culture and supporting the development of local creative industries by collaborating with relevant stakeholders and audiences,” she said.
Walt Disney currently broadcasts Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD in Africa. King said that Disney Junior, which airs on DStv and GOtv, reaches over 1.3 million kids and their families across Africa every day following its launch in June 2011. Next month, Disney Africa will also launch a Disney Junior Africa Facebook page.
