Zimbabwe to auction LTE spectrum to raise digital migration funds

The Zimbabwean government plans to auction long term evolution (LTE) spectrum to mobile operators in a desperate attempt to raise USD 173 million needed to complete the broadcast digitalisation before June 2015.

The money would be utilised for migrating existing transmitters, buying new digital transmitters, migrating the studios at Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), migrating monitoring equipment for the regulator and putting in place new regulations for the licensing of the new digital broadcasting.

Zimbabwe currently has 24 transmission sites out of which 10 transmission sites have migrated to digital broadcasting while an additional 24 digital transmission sites are still required. The country’s digital migration have stalled due to acute shortage of funding.
