Chilean operator VTR (Liberty Global) will launch a new residential broadband service using the AWS spectrum the company obtained to enter the mobile market.
VTR launched mobile telephony services in 2012, but then the company stopped using its own network and decided to become a virtual operator (MVNO), in 2014, using Telefónica’s network. VTR’s CEO, Guillermo Ponce, explained that the company initially started using its 1700/2100 MHz spectrum, but then the business became no longer feasible because many terminals did not operate under that frequency, La Tercera reported.
We are obliged to use that spectrum and faced with the complexity of the lack of terminals we discovered that this new product opened up a possibility”, said Ponce. The company has already started testing the new service, which will complement Wi-Fi inside the home. The official launch would be at the end of April.
