Viacom acquires majority stake in Brazilian comedy producer Porta dos Fundos

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) announced an agreement to buy a majority stake in Porta dos Fundos, the Brazilian short-form comedy content producer, with great popularity and success, especially on YouTube.

Porta dos Fundos was founded in 2012 by Antonio Tabet, Fábio Porchat, Gregório Duvivier, João Vicente de Castro and Ian SBF. It is known for its short-form comedy sketches and TV programming. Porta dos Fundos YouTube channel is a big success in Brazil and it already surpassed 3 billion video views.

VIMN and Porta dos Fundos will co-create new productions aim of strengthening the production of original content for brands in linear and non-linear platforms, the media company announced. The two companies previously worked together on the co-production of “Portatil”, a five-episode series showing the backstage of Porta dos Fundos’ homonymous theatre play, aired on Comedy Central Brazil in 2016.

Porta dos Fundos assets include other channels on YouTube, the site, a wide catalog of videos in short formats, TV series, mobile applications, games and licensed products. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed as well as the percentage of stake. VIMN said that it has the option to increase its stake in the future.
