Univision channels go dark to Dish, Sling TV subs

As of Saturday, June 30, Univision networks are no longer available on Dish Network and Sling TV in the United States, “affecting its Spanish-speaking clients”, said the media company in a release.
According to Univision, the removal of the channels followed Dish’s rejection of an offer that would have extended the parties’ existing contract to allow renewal negotiations to continue without interrupting viewers’ access to Univision content.
The blackout includes Univision Network and its affiliated stations, as well as UniMás and its affiliated stations and Galavision. “Dish also pulled seven Univision channels from its Sling TV streaming service—Univision, UniMás, Galavision, Univision Deportes Network (UDN), El Rey Network, TLNovelas and Foro TV”, the company added.
In a release, Dish said, “Despite ratings for these channels decreasing by approximately 30% over the past five years among Dish customers, Univision is demanding rate increases of roughly 75 percent. In fact, ratings for its flagship Univision channel have declined nearly 40% since 2012”.
According to Dish, this is “Univision’s fourth takedown with a major pay-TV provider in two years”. Meanwhile, Dish, DishLATINO and Sling TV are offering qualified, affected customers a digital over-the-air (OTA) antenna and installation at no cost.
