TV Islam, the first Islamic television channel in Malawi, is set for a debut in the country as the channel is in the advance stage of studio construction and program planning. The move comes after the Muslim community, which is the second largest religious group (36%) in Malawi, complained about the low coverage of Islamic content by the public broadcaster.
“The TV station will be housed in the Globe House at Yiannakis in Limbe, Blantyre,” said Sheikh Mustahab Ayami, a senior advisor to TV Islam project. “We have also already designed the studio and right now we are visiting other existing television stations to appreciate what they are doing so that when we roll out we should give our viewers nothing but the best.”
The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) had issued a licence to TV Islam in 2013 along with several other radio and TV stations. TV Islam is however waiting for the digital switch for better quality picture.
