Sibichen K Mathew, regional head (Karnataka and Kerala), Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has noted that by the end of 2014, STBs would have to be installed in all of Karnataka without fail and has urged the stakeholders to ensure it happens.
Matthew also noted that digitisation would be good for all television households in India. He said, “This digitalisation of cable TV network, already completed in four metros and 38 cities, will provide various value added services including broadband for the consumers.” The ongoing digitisation drive in India is being implemented in four different phases based on location of the cities and towns.
The first and second phases are already complete however cities like Kolkata and Hyderabad and even Bangalore struggled with full digitisation. The third phase and fourth phases which will target smaller towns and villages in India is likely to be over by December 2014.
