It has been made official. Sony Pictures Networks will introduce the Sony BBC Earth on March 6. The forthcoming channel will be available in both high-definition (HD) and standard-definition (SD), in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages.
The decision has been announced once the company received approval from the Ministry of Broadcasting and Information. The channel will serve its audience with factual content.
Infotainment provided by the channel will revolve around the work of factual filmmakers and will encompass the microscopic world till the depth of space. Genres will span over adventure, natural history, travel and documentaries.
Rohit Gupta, the president of SPNI, revealed that: “What we have seen in other genres is that, when new players enter, the category expands. We are confident that we will do that with the content that we have. Our access to content is greater. The BBC is the largest curator of content”.
To recall, the channel BBC Earth, is a factual entertainment channel which forms part of MSM-Worldwide Factual Media (MSMW). MSMW is a joint venture between Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) (74%) and BBC Worldwide (26%).
