ShowMax, the Video-On-Demand service of Naspers, has teamed up with Vodacom, African mobile communications company, to introduce a new internet TV option, ShowMax Select, for its subscribers. The service will be a low-cost one priced 49 ZAR (3.65 USD), monthly on an add-to-bill basis.
Subscribers will be served with unlimited access to a collection of TV shows, movies, kids’ shows and documentaries. Local content including ‘Isibaya’, ‘Shaka Zulu’, ‘Binnelanders’ and ‘Dineo’s Diary’ will be readily available. International titles like ‘Teen Wolf’, ‘The Driver’ and ‘Line of Duty’ will be available to users.
Chris Savides, Head of ShowMax Africa, commented about the service: “ShowMax Select is all about making internet TV even more accessible. It’s half the price of our existing ShowMax Premium service with a strong focus on local content. We designed Select to be viewed first and foremost on mobile devices, with multiple options for managing data consumption”.
He further said: “Internet TV services should be accessible to everyone, not just the lucky few who have credit cards. By partnering with Vodacom, we’ve made it simple to charge both ShowMax Select and ShowMax Premium directly to your Vodacom account, no credit card needed”.
ShowMax Select goes further with the optimization of its service for viewing on smartphones and tablets to watch offline. Three different streaming video quality settings are available and the default level is standard definition and uses almost 40% less data, compared to the default setting on ShowMax Premium. Users could download 25 shows at once.
