Orient Hontai Capital completes acquisition of 53.5% stake in Mediapro

China’s Orient Hontai Capital has closed its acquisition of a 53.5% stake in Imagina Media Audiovisual – born from the merger between Mediapro and Globomedia – after obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals.
Now, the rest of Imagina’s shareholders are WPP (22.5%) and its founders Tatxo Benet (12%) and Jaume Roures (12%). Roures and Benet will continue in their management roles in the company. In February, the Chinese fund announced the acquisition of the shares of Torreal (22.5%), Televisa (19%) and Mediavideo (12%). The transaction gives Imagina an enterprise evaluation of €1.9 billion (USD 2.2 billion).
According to the company, this operation “will not only allow Imagina to introduce advanced audiovisual production technology in China, but also opens new opportunities for cooperation between China, Spain and Latin America in audiovisual technology, content production, cultural and sporting events”.
The Spanish group currently holds the rights to the UEFA Champions League for the next three seasons, the commercialization of the international rights of the Spanish League and the rights of Ligue 1 (France), among others.
