State owned South African broadcaster, SABC, has strongly opposed OpenView HD’s inclusion of SABC’s three main television channels as part of its newly launched FTA satellite bouquet.
The public broadcaster said in a statement that there has been no agreement with OpenView to broadcast SABC channels, while Platco Digital responded by saying: “The SABC, as the public broadcaster, has various obligations and any attempts by [it] to prevent Platco from carrying [its] channels would be unlawful.”
This comes a month after e.tv, sister company of Platco Digital, criticised an ‘exclusive’ USD 55.4 deal struck between SABC and MultiChoice where the public broadcaster sold broadcasting assets to MultiChoice along with exclusive rights to the SABC archive. E.tv had described the move as ‘directly contradicting government policy’. The commercial broadcast of OpenView HD started on Tuesday with the first three slots allotted to SABC 1, 2 and 3 followed by e.tv in the fourth slot.
