Netflix plans to offer 700 original series and movies in 2018

Netflix plans to have 700 original TV shows and movies on its platform this year, according to Chief Financial Officer David Wells. The company has already announced that it will spend more than USD 8 billion on content in 2018.
“Let’s continue to add content. It’s working, it’s driving growth,” Wells said at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, according to Variety. Among the 700 shows he mentioned are included 80 non-English-language original productions from outside the United States, such as “Dark” from Germany and “Club de Cuervos” from Mexico. In addition to series, Netflix plans to also launch 80 original films this year.
The executive said that, although the company intends to produce its own content, “people don’t care where the stories come from.” “We’re about having the best content. We don’t necessarily have to do it ourselves,” he said.
Wells also referred to the increase in marketing spending, which, according to the company, will rise from USD 1.3 billion in 2017 to USD 2 billion in 2018 this year. “We used to think every incremental dollar was best spent on content,” the executive said. Now, the company think that “marketing is a multiplier on the content spend.”
