Mzansi Magic, the DStv entertainment channel in South Africa, will be offering a new series to its viewers as from the beginning of next year. Entitled ‘Lockdown’, the local drama will be premiered on channel number 161.
Reneilwe Sema, the Head of Drama at M-Net, commented about the future screening: “Lockdown is an exciting new series that will raise the bar high for South African television drama; there’s nothing like it on our screens. Mzansi Magic viewers are in for a treat because this is gripping stuff. Each episode is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you craving more”.
He further added that: “These characters are authentically South African and their stories are recognisable to many of us. Viewers will alternately love and vilify them because they will recognise someone they know, have heard of or even a little bit of themselves in the characters”.
The story takes place in a high security female prison where the paths of the detainees are unravelled. The series is produced by Black Brain production, featuring Ma Z (Dawn Thandeka King) who is all set for achieving her freedom, whatever be the methods she uses, so that she can become a good and present mother to the daughter she left on the outside. The story also involves Monde (Zola Nombona) who ended up behind the bars because of her wily money-hungry boyfriend/producer Zakes (Luxolo Ndabeni).
Among the other protagonists are Lorcia Cooper featuring as the tough-as-nails prison boxing champ Tyson, Nomsa Buthelezi playing the role of Slenda who is often delusional, Beauty played by Slindile Nodangala (prison’s Governor) and Lindiwe Ndlovu as Sharon who is the ambitious warder.
