African pay-TV provider, MultiChoice, has issued warnings to Zimbabweans who illegally buy South African DStv packages to watch channels not available in Zimbabwe. DStv Zimbabwe does not carry SABC 1, 2 or 3 so many Zimbabweans buy DStv South Africa smart-cards from dealers in South Africa and Zimbabwe to gain access to the SABC channels.
“MultiChoice is aware of this practice and has issued several warnings to the public that this is illegal,” said Caroline Creasy, general manager for corporate affairs at MultiChoice. She added it was impossible to measure the extent of illegal viewing in Zimbabwe.
However, last year a Botswana court ordered South African signal provider Sentech to scramble analogue SABC signals over-reaching into countries such as Botswana and Zimbabwe, blocking access to an estimated three million Zimbabweans who were accessing SABC on free-to-air decoders.
