Movistar Colombia integrates Netflix into new set-top boxes

Movistar announced that it has integrated Netflix into its pay TV service. The operator’s customers who also have a Netflix subscription can now access the content through the new connected set-top boxes (STBs). This way, the company became the first telco in Colombia to offer this option.
The Netflix app is available in the STB menu, which also allows customers to sign up for a new account. In a statement, Movistar said that in the coming months more benefits will be announced as part of the alliance between the two companies.
“We know that the way of watching television has evolved and that entertainment has strength in Internet platforms such as Movistar Play and Netflix, which is why we want to simplify the lives of our customers by allowing them, through our new set-top boxes, to access all the content in one place,” said Fabián Hernández, CEO of Telefónica Movistar Colombia.
The company’s streaming platform, Movistar Play, also added direct access to Netflix in the ‘Play & Go’ category, which also includes other OTT options such as Fox, HBO GO, TNT GO, Sony Channel and History Play, among others.
This initiative is part of the global agreement that Telefónica and Netflix announced in May for Europe and Latin America. Telefónica’s operations in Chile and Brazil already have integrated the service. At the end of Q218, the company reported in Colombia close to 564,000 Pay TV accesses.
