Kenyan mobile network operator to diversify with TV content

Safaricom, Kenya’s leading mobile network operator, plans to diversify its business and sell bundled Internet and television services for on-demand viewing within the next 12 months.

“We will provide aggregation of content and delivery of content,” said Bob Collymore, CEO of Safaricom. “We will become a content provider to several forms of media including TV stations and YouTube.”

The TV offering, which will be available on devices including tablet computers, mobile phones and television sets, is aimed at tapping revenue streams beyond the company’s core voice service.
