Ivory Coast to launch tender for private commercial television licenses in May

In the process of liberalization of the television space in Ivory Coast, a tender will be launched in May 2016 to issue operating licenses for private commercial television. The announcement was made by the Minister of Communication, Affoussiata-Bamba Lamine during a press conference.

“As from May 2016, the launching of the call for tenders will start followed by the other stages of authorization procedures for new operators of private commercial television,” said the Minister of Communication.

She further said that technical bail of one billion CFA francs (1.5 million euros) will be required and applications will be received and transmitted by the High Authority for Audiovisual Communication (HACA). A commission will be established to review the applications, including financing, source of funds and the contents of the proposed programs.

According to the minister of communication, all the conditions are now in place to liberalize television in Ivory Coast. “All the technological changes inherent of the sector related to the digital television transition, which had the effect of delaying the process are not affecting the implementation of certain measures for the liberalization of television, “said Affoussiata Bamba-Lamine.
